By that, I mean that the work I've got on is enough, but editing and album design use up the time and energy that I'd rather be using to take pictures.
To keep my camera and I busy, I've got a couple of projects and goals for this year.
One of my goals is that to get one of my weddings published in a magazine or on a wedding blog.
The recognition that I'd get from that would be incredible. If anybody knows someone who knows someone in the biz, help a brother out!

My other goal, with no direct finish line, is to simply shoot more. For fun.
My job here started off purely as a hobby. Now I earn a living from it. That alone for me is incredible, but that also means that my camera usually only gets to see weddings.
I need to get back to taking my camera out with me everyday and shooting something not because i'm being paid to do so, but because I want to!
Old-school readers of this blog will remember that I used to give away for download a free wallpaper every Monday, this feature had a very catchy name; "Free Wallpaper Monday!"
Each Monday, I felt a fair bit of pressure from my readers to get a picture up, and it did me good! It got me out there with my camera!
So as from today, I will do my very best to get a picture of some description, whether it be an iPhone shot or a wedding shot, up on this blog every Thursday...or something.

Jessica had a day off (she does work, I promise. Very hard too). We drove down to Cheddar and before we left for home, I saw this very image in my head.
I had to climb a very small hill which was near impossible because of my poor choice of footwear and the snow.
The picture is pretty far away from technically perfect, mostly because of the water droplets on the lens... but I like it.

Today, in comparison to how I was feeling about business yesterday, i'm feeling great. Since then I have had three bookings! THREE!
This year is going to be so busy, i'm just glad it's a job that im so passionate about.
I've also been very busy with something that's in the pipeline. Keep an eye out for some massive changes yeh?

So this picture of the day thing seems to be going well so far doesn't it! (I'm sorry, I've done a terrible job of keeping on top of it already!)

My first entry on the picture of the day, I was complaining a little on how quiet business is at the moment. Well now, already things are incredible. I'm getting booked up left right and centre and it really is a strange concept for me.

I'm getting allot of lovely couples booking me to capture the happiest day of their lives! The nice things that they're saying about my work are incredible to hear. They feel like I'm the person for the job! I'm grinning like an idiot!
It's just very bizarre for me at the moment, sure '09 was great, but already '10 is booming and I'm finding it hard to stop jumping around with excitement each time a couple books me!

Something that reminded me to blog today was a new venue I found that is no distance from me at all, it's called Berwick Lodge, and goodness me, it looks beautiful inside. I would love to shoot a wedding there. By foot (because admit it, who drives anymore?) it's 1.4 miles away!

Are you taking pictures?
What are you using?
Don't worry about having the best equipment, all that matters is that you're taking pictures.
Use your mobile phone, use the old 35mm camera at the back of your cupboard, or just your new digital camera that you keep on meaning to go out and use but haven't had the chance.
Get out there and take pictures of whatever you like.

So I couldn't post just one picture today.
It just started snowing a little while ago, and if you're a UK reader, you're thinking something along the lines of "Go away snow, we've had enough of you"

I saw these huge storm clouds rolling in, followed by a very heavy blizzard, followed by sunshine! I bet 90% of the residents of Bristol hardly knew there was a snow storm. Incredible.
So to show you how quick it all happened, heres the first one;

Both quite nice pictures, sure. But the amazing thing in my mind is that these pictures were taken just ten minutes within each other.

And just whilst I've been typing this up, the sun has set, but there is still an beautiful sunset lighting up the sky, just enough for me to be able to see more snow clouds rolling in! Hopefully we won't get more snow like we did last time round!

This blog links in a little with yesterdays picture of the day where I was encouraging anyone with a camera to take pictures.
I don't think I explained myself enough. But to illustrate, I don't always take my camera with me. I used to, religiously, but not now.
Instead I'll usually just have my iPhone, or my little compact camera. These two pictures  were taken with my little compact and I'm happy enough with the quality of it that I actually use it at weddings instead of my digital SLR equipment worth a four figure sum.

Remember a few pictures back, I was talking about a new wedding venue I found called Berwick Lodge?
Well, I had an appointment with the wedding coordinator today. A really nice lady called Fiona.
Berwick Lodge is by far the most incredible hotel I've ever been in.
Without wanting to raise my hopes too much, it looks like I'll be one of only two recommended photographers for the hotel.
I can't wait to shoot there, it really is something else! And rumor has it that they'll soon have a Michelin starred Chef gracing their kitchens!

Anyway, I'm going to look out the window a bit more.

Welcome to February.

I'm very busy today, so I'll keep it short and sweet.
In reference to my little comments about 'it doesn't matter what camera you use to take pictures', I'll be posting some iPhone images soon, I promise.

Meanwhile, I had to share this image with you.
This picture was taken back in October in Neal's Yard, Covent Garden.
It was a little tree with lots of paper tags tied to it with notes from people. A bit like facebook, but cute.

And, as promised, an iPhone picture. I've got loads of iPhone pictures of our cat, but I don't want a successful wedding photography blog to turn into a blog about fur balls and litter training, so I'm trying very hard to not inundate you with them!

I took this picture out of the car window on a miserable day.
I love this picture though, and I realise that I've already posted a picture with rain drops distorting the image but I'm not going to make any apologies!
Shooting in Manchester is always great fun for me! One of my favorite weddings I've shot was there and I've got plenty of bookings coming up, including one at the Great John Street Hotel.
For future reference, all pictures taken on my phone haven't been touched by photoshop

I say bring on the Spring! Next will come the Summer, it usually goes like that doesn't it? Although in this country, Winter likes to say 'hi' in the middle of Summer sometimes! And yet somehow, it is still a reliable topic of conversation in this country! Brilliant!

This blog, as I promised the other day will definitely get busy from next week! I can't wait to blow the digital dust off this blog (I can't believe I just used that terminology. If you're still reading, thank you!)

This little picture was taken in Clifton, Bristol whilst my friend, Gav Letsoalo from South Africa was over. He's a director who specalises in music videos! We went out for a walk and spotted this tree with this incredible blossom on. The tree with the blossom on just happened to be the same tree in the 6th picture down on this photoshoot in Clifton. Wow, that was ages ago!

Well, I have a nasty chest infection/sore throat/excuse to feel sorry for myself, but those things aside, I'm really looking forward to this weekend.
This weekend is the very first wedding of 2010!
2009 proved to be a very eventful year, and 2010 already promises to be even busier!

At first I was a little worried that I had got left behind, but after seeing some incredible photographers whose work I admire only recently posting their first wedding of the year, I felt a little better!
Today's picture of the day is in my eyes, nothing particularly special. It's a nice sunset with some impressive clouds, but I needed to share this with you because where we live, we get views like this, literally every day. I take pictures of the view pretty much all the time on my phone. If the view is especially great, I'll get my digital camera out, and today, I did.

This picture was taken with a new lens of mine, so I've been using it very very heavily so that I know what the picture will look like before I take it. (thats the idea anyway)

Blogging two days in a row? I must be on something!
I'll keep this on quick, as I'm taking this as my break from designing some albums.
This was taken up in Scotland last summer. A nice break from Bristol!
I love our friend's hair getting blown by the wind and echoing the landscape. The landscape up there was eerie yet beautiful, and in some places, lunar-like.

For reference, this was taken on a digital compact camera.

We shot around the Bristol docks for some grungy textures but ended up in the Millennium Square area of Bristol to make use of the artificial lights and cool architecture.
It was a little strange doing a shoot in my own city. It's very rare that I'm this close to home, I'm usually doing an engagement shoot in a field in Shropshire, a forest on Halloween or on a farm in mid Wales! I loved it though, it's great to welcome in the wedding season with a couple like this!

This photo was taken at the Lloyds building on the floating harbor in the centre of Bristol.
Mark was saying that this is a world famous spot for skaters and although there was just a handful of skaters around they were more than willing to help out. Cheers guys!

Look out for their wedding at the end of the month and of course the rest of their pictures from this shoot very soon. Mark and Amy are getting married at the beautiful Priston Mill, just outside Bath. I'll be there a few more times this year, so that'll be good!

On a side note, Mark ran the Bath Half Marathon yesterday, not sure how he did yet though!

I'll soon be putting together a list of equipment that I use too, it seems like most of the blokes wanted to know what gear I use. I wonder why that is?!
I created a video showing all my gear and my reasons for using it, but I chose to quickly delete it as I hate my own voice, I have a sore throat so I sound like a tramp, and I was rambling too much.

So thats the end of that!
Perhaps I'll put together some pictures for the gear-heads soon.

I know I've neglected this blog recently, I'm terribly sorry about that. I can assure you that this blog is going to be very busy.
I've got plenty of shoots coming up, along with weddings-a-plenty!
I really can't wait to shoot my next wedding!

The next wedding will be Chris and Victoria up in Preston. We had a great time at Ashton Court in Clifton, Bristol, having a photoshoot in the amazing grounds!
I ordered a few business cards especially for their wedding at Samlesbury Hall. Each card has a different picture on from their Bristol engagement shoot.

1 ) Snow, you can fall, but only at night
2 ) Clouds, you can go now (5-10 cirrus clouds can stay, scattered across the sky)
3 ) Sky, stay blue.
4 ) In the morning, Sun comes out and shines without melting the snow
5 ) Repeat step 1>4
6 ) Snow, you can stay on the ground and trees for 2-3 days (note: Snow should fall before kids break up from school to give them an extended holiday)
7 ) Temperature, remain at a steady 0 degrees to avoid ice making things annoying.
8 ) Snow, after staying for 2-3 days, you may now leave.
9 ) Repeat if required.
10 ) Summer.

So far in Bristol, pretty good!
Let's just hope it doesn't make things tricky for people.

Jessica had a snow day, as did most of the country I presume, so we had a nice breakfast and walked up to Blaise Castle Estate.
You'll probably remember Paul and Cassie's Wedding ceremony was held there in the Museum?
It's a beautiful building inside and I'd love to shoot there again.
Shooting at a museum is pretty amazing, but it's in walking distance, that just makes things perfect!

It snowed here in Bristol around christmas time, but my mum was in hospital having two operations and ending up in ICU, not the most fun we, or she's had, so we didn't get to enjoy the snow!
I'm just glad that she's out now, and that things are getting back to normal.

I'd imagine there are hundreds of bloggers who have posted snow pictures. So I'll just copy them!

First get out there and build a snow man, then come back and check out these pictures!

Here's Jessica for those who don't know what she looks like.
Pretty isn't she?


I seem to always take pictures of Beech leaves when I'm out.
I think they're beautiful leaves. Such a warm fiery orange and they seem to take forever to fall off the trees.

So this is the actual Castle. We can see it from our house! Which is pretty cool!

Now, blogging is fine when I've got plenty to blog about, but right now, things are still very slow.
I'm getting so many bookings coming in, but I can't post pictures of cheques or bank statements.
Bring on the summer! I really can't wait to shoot loads of weddings this year!

So to keep my goal, I need to find material to blog about.
So here goes...

In September Jessica, myself and some other friends travelled up to the Isle of Lewis for a holiday.

Here are some of the more scenic pictures from the trip.

We flew up to Glasgow, stayed overnight at a friends, then drove up to Ullapool.
Low cloud cover was the visual theme of the holiday and "Wow!!" seemed to be the word that came out of my mouth the most!
Incredible scenery!

You see some houses and you wonder what inspired them to build there.
Then the answer becomes obvious. They built there because it's beautiful

This was the first beach that we went to. The sand was a mixture of white, with black texture running through it from the pete.
As the black petey water ran into the sea, the sea was also black. Incredible.
Also, this beach was huge, and there were 3 other people on there.

Yes, I did get wet for this shot!


I'll be honest, some of the scenery was a little eerie.
Mainland Scotland was far more beautiful, and had far more trees.
The Isle of Lewis was so windy that trees just couldn't survive. Instead there were rocks


This was the windiest day that I've ever experienced, even windier than this photoshoot
The locals said to us that we were crazy for being out in this weather!
Incredible weather, and literally breathtaking. 


This was an amazing beach. Strange to have surf with mountains in the background.
I used to surf a little when I was younger but I'm not sure if this was normal...
The water was bitterly cold for me.
Thank goodness I had my boxers on!


I was a little short on friends, so I made a new one! Hi!


We visited the standing stones which are... well... stones that are standing.
It was an ancient burial ground.
I attempted a new photographic technique for this shot and was very happy with the shot.
Each of these stones was far taller than me

On the last night, we went for a little star gazing.
Last time I saw a sky like this was in Hawai'i.
We laid on the bonnet of the car and freezed our arse's off.
It was incredible!

We stayed in Ullapool which is on the mainland, this is where the ferry leaves from. This was our view from our youth hostel.
Beautiful.

I hope you didn't mind me sharing this with you!
We had an incredible time!

Now I just have to find more to blog about!

I've loved 2009, I've met some incredible people, learnt some good lessons, ate some wonderful food, attempted to dance with the best dancers to the worst and best music, seen some incredible bands and taken some killer pictures.

I can't wait to get wait to shoot my first wedding of 0'10.
It already promises to be an even more successful year than '09.

Thank you to all my brides and grooms who have chosen me over other photographers, I've really enjoyed meeting you all and getting to know you.
We've had fun.

And finally, thank you to my amazing wife. None of this would of been possible.

First, I shot our close friends, the Hornby's as an anniversary present for their parents.

Then came the wedding of Debby and Craig, this was a biggy for me for many reasons.

I can't believe this was in 09! It feels like years ago!
Mark and Laura are a wonderful couple, I loved shooting them.

This is my brother Phil, and his wife, Hannah.
They're allot of fun and awesome family to have.
This shoot was a little embarrassing for me as I had to tell my brother how to kiss photogenically! Mmmm!

Then came a really great wedding!
Ian and Grace
This by far though was one of my favorite ever bride portraits.
(I was also very pleased with the edit!)

Bianca and Jimmy came next, I did an engagement shoot with them in Knighton. For those who don't know where Knighton is, it's no where near anything.
Bianca and Jimmy are great friends of ours, I was really looking forward to shooting their wedding!

I did a few child portraits around Bristol, mostly in the Ashton court grounds.

Then a Bristol photoshoot with this couple, Mark and Laura are allot of fun to be around.

Then their wedding came, I forget now but by the looks of it, the photoshoot was either 1 or 2 days before the wedding!
A great wedding, and a beautiful bride.

Some familiar faces in there? I should think so! And look out for Rowan in the middle here, I'm shooting his wedding this year too!

Paul and Cassie, what a great couple and super good looking too! People like this make my job very easy.

By Far, my favorite groomsmen portrait of '09.
I would never usually edit an image like this, but with such awesome faces, I had to push it to the extreme.
Without the expressions, this picture would be a flop.
FYI, I had a bride book me because of this picture.

Right, I've been looking forward to posting this one. For sure, a favorite engagement shoot. This was text book.
1) Luke and Jasmine both put allot of effort into looking good for their shoot.
2) Both start the shoot quite nervous.
3) But, chose some great locations with personal attachments
4) Light was perfect
5) Did a little trespassing
6) By the end of the shoot, I'm sure Luke and Jasmine forgot I was taking pictures, they felt so relaxed.
7) Shot roughly the same amount of images on this shoot as what I do at an average wedding.

Then a really fun Engagement shoot in Badminton with Adam and Lucy. Their wedding is in the summer. Remember that season?

Then I tried something that I've not really done before. A baby shoot. Harvey was easy to shoot, as were his parents, Becki and Ben.
Looking forward to doing a few more baby shoots this year.

And a wedding at Clifton Mansion house in Bristol. I can't wait to shoot there again this year!

Great looking couple.
Awesome locations.
Both started off nervous.
Ended up dancing by the end.
True story

A few weeks before, I had been inspired to change my equipment to make my pictures better.
This part of the shoot was at dusk... well into dusk actually. This was shot with totally natural flash.
I was nervous about changing my equipment, but shots like this made me confident that I had made the right choice.

I'll keep this one short and sweet.
I was contacted by this lady, she asked me to take some pictures of her and her husband in their wedding attire for the wedding anniversary.
Sure, no problem at all, but why?
She was so disappointed in her images that she had to have them done again.
I hear this sort of things very often.
Do not book a photographer that you're not sure about.
I personally know people who have cried because their wedding pictures were appalling.
Your wedding pictures are one of the only things left from your wedding, so don't mess around.
Anyway!...
This shoot was allot of fun!

Matt and Annie got married.
Hands down, one of my favorite weddings of '09.
You should of been there!

I don't think I'm doing this couples wedding, but they were guests at a wedding that I also was a guest at. Tried my best not to be an Uncle Bob

Strictly speaking, I didn't take these pictures. Jessica did, so although I set up the lighting and camera, she takes full credit for the shots.
Unfortunately, she doesn't plan on taking any more shots as she doesn't think she's good enough! Crazy I know, but I think we'll do a few baby shoots together, with Jessica entertaining and assisting!

Really looking forward to Chris and Victoria's wedding in March, that's going to be allot of fun.
This shoot was loads of fun!

On my way up to this wedding, I got an email from the WPJA saying that they wanted me to join their organisation.
This was the best wedding/business related news I was given all year.
I was so glad that I could shoot a wedding the very next day!

Matt and Yvonne had an engagement shoot by the harbor. It was here that I realised that the evenings were getting darker, so this shoot was quite a challenge for me. Great couple though, they made it much easier.

Nothing...I repeat Nothing, beats the expression of the guy behind Yvonne! Brilliant!

Then for my last wedding of the year, Jimmy and Louise got married at Clearwell Castle.

That was a busy year on reflection!

We had loads of fun in the fog and the cold on that day.
Unfortunately, Jimmy and Louise wern't exactly blessed with good weather for their wedding either, but what I love about Clearwell Castle is that if the weather is poor outside, then there are so many rooms to discover!
In fact, embarrassingly, I didn't realise that there was a downstairs to the castle, full of a dance floor and even more rooms!
I've always finished shooting before the dancing starts at the other Clearwell Castle weddings I've shot.
I much prefer these longer weddings, sure they're far more physically exhausting, but I enjoy it as I really get to know the guests and they get to know me.

This was the biggest wedding I've shot at Clearwell and certainly the most fun!
It was also my first Chinese wedding, so plenty of new sights I've not witnessed before, like the tea ceremony which I found fascinating!
I'd love to be there for their Chinese wedding in Hong Kong, it sounds loads of fun!

Friends and family flew in literally from all over the world to see Jimmy and Louise get married, so the atmosphere was amazing!

This was the last wedding of the year which is a bit sad, but I've had an incredible year.
I'll be posting some of my favorite images up on here later on in the week!

I've never seen so many cameras at one wedding, so this was quite easy.

And now the tea ceremony. It's a chance for the older members of the family and important relatives to give gifts and advice

I really took a shine to "Uncle Joe"... not sure he realised it though!

You'll remember Matt and Yvonnes pictures from a few weeks back, that was a pretty long journey for us. We drove down one more time for their wedding a few weekends back.
The weather was pretty questionable to say the least. We had gale force winds, thunder and lightning and horses strewn across the road!

But i'm doing my best not to be a walking cliché here when I say "the bad weather was no match for the smiles on everybodys faces!" (sorry)

I met up with Yvonne in the morning whilst she was having her make up done by Melissa, I then met up with the rest of the guests at the Beaufort Arms.
Goodness me! It was like the annual "past, present and future bride, groom and guest at a josephyarrow.com wedding" there!

It was weird to know or recognise so many people just from my weddings that I've shot. It made me feel so proud inside! (thanks D&C)
The pub was gorgeous inside with allot of low autumn sun peeking through the storm clouds coming through the windows. Loads of noise, excitement and general merryment! Lovely stuff!

The guests (not I) walked to Beaulieu Abbey, an incredible building that once acted as a dining room for the monks there. It was a little bit like your dining room at home, but a bit bigger.
It was a very relaxed and personal ceremony with friends giving readings, singing and performing songs for Matt and Yvonne.
The guests moved over to the Abbey Domus where the party started.

The weather was all over the place!

There was a gap in the weather long enough for a few shots in the beautiful grounds.

An incredible room, mostly lit by candles.
At one point, the open log fire at the back of the room started really smoking and the visibility was actually pretty terrible!
Smoke poisoning put nobody off though and the party carried on like nothing happened!


Such a cool wedding cake! I love all the details on it!





I love taking pictures of people using their cameras. I don't know why, perhaps it's because I enjoy looking at how other people capture their own memories. (and the poses they get into!)

Yvonne's Mother is Polish and also gave a speech. At the end, she said that it wouldn't be a real wedding without this drink. Then almost the whole room broke out into this Polish song whilst knocking this back, which just topped it all off! I loved it!

I think Yvonne looks amazing here!

The live music was provided by one of the best bands I've worked along with.
They're called Grouper and played loads of Pop-Rock stuff, from Razorlight to Snow Patrol










And that's about it!
What a wedding, I really enjoyed this one!
It was very tiring, but looking back at these images, I'm thrilled with what I did!
